Track Biography:

The North Down point-to-point moved to its current course at Kirkistown in 2006 and have held three meetings each season since then. The course is located towards the eastern side of the Ards Peninsula near the village of Portavogie.  It’s in an area that was used as an airfield during the war and hence is very flat and well drained.

Kirkistown is a very level left handed course run over a circuit just short of a mile. Runners jump two fences close to the spectator’s area and a further three along the back straight.

Our November fixture is normally the final meeting of the autumn calendar in the northern area. Conversely, our February and March fixtures are two of the earliest in the northern spring calendar.

Some of the leading graduates from our point-to-point include Simonsig, Petit Mouchoir & Agus A Vic.

How To Get There

From Newtownards

Take the A20, signposted to Kircubbin/Portaferry. After Kircubbin turn left into the B173, signposted to Portavogie/Cloughey. Follow this road for about 3 miles and you will pass the Kirkistown Motor Racing Track on your left. After a further half mile you will see the entrance to our track on your left.

From Newry and south of the border

Take the A1 north to Hillsborough.  Then go through Hillsborough and follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards. There is an alternative route using the Strangford to Portaferry ferry which is about 15 miles shorter.

From the West

Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A49 and then follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards.

By Air

Our point-to-point is located an hour and a half from Belfast International airport and two and a half hours from Dublin airport.

Combined with our free parking, we are lucky to have a clear viewing track where all race goers can get up close to the action with our final fence located close to the car park so you can enjoy the thrill of the action from the comfort of your car.

In our bookmakers ring you can view and bet on any off-course races on the day in both England and Ireland.

Food

In between races, spectators can avail of the catering options that we have on offer.

Our outside catering vendor offers a wide range of burgers, rolls, sausages and chips.
 

Beverages

For those looking for something to keep them warm, there will tea and coffee available throughout the day.

Our on site caterer will also have a selection of refreshments on offer.

For anyone looking for a little tipple, why not try a drink from our Gin Van which offers flavoured tonics along with a range of premium gins.

Is there a dress code for point-to-points?

No, we do not have an official dress code we just advise our race goers to stay warm and dry for your days racing and to prepare yourself for all types of Irish weather.

Dogs are very welcome, but need to be kept on a lead at all times.

Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments. We also have a range of catering options on course.

At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.

No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in Portavogie on your way to the races.

Amenities

Kirkistown point-to-point is an ideal day out for all the family, giving you the opportunity to sample the heart of national hunt racing. Admission is £10 with all children U16 free.

Kirkistown Motor Racing Circuit is a permanent motorsport circuit located next door to the point-to-point which is between the villages of Kirkistown and Portavogie, on the Ards Peninsula of County Down.

The circuit is owned and operated by the 500 Motor Racing Club of Ireland, who opened the circuit in 1953 on the site of the former RAF Kirkistown Royal Air Force airfield.

Annaghbeg was only beaten just over five lengths at Loughbrickland last month and would look to have a progressive profile, whilst Coolmeen Park was an expensive store purchase last year and he travelled well for a long way at Portrush before weakening to suggest he might come on for the run. But IN LIMBO is preferred after an eye-catching debut at Tattersalls. He did not enjoy the run of the race on that occasions before staying on to finish a promising third.

Finding Fame is an obvious danger in what would be her third run in as weeks, and she has finished second in each of those two outings this term to ensure that she also comes into the race in good form. Lars Lass is a newcomer to this sphere but has finished in the frame off a mark of 93 over hurdles to suggest she cannot be completely discounted.

FLASH CONROY is the name that stands out on paper after he had made an eye-catching debut at Tallow back in February when only losing out in the dying strides of a big-field maiden. The horse that finished 20 lengths behind him on that occasion has since won on his hurdling debut to advertise the form, and with the stable operating to a 30 per cent strike rate this term, he looks the one to beat. Zettabyte was well backed ahead of his debut in Broughshane, when he was only denied by a short-head, whilst Ballylinch, Ballydemond, Brave Starlight and Shinnhill are others with chances in a competitive heat.

GLOBAL ASSEMBLY was pitched in the deep end for his stable debut at Necarne last Saturday, making the jump from winning a Belclare maiden to contesting an open. He emerged with a lot of credit, when just two lengths behind the former Grade 1 winner The Storyteller. Wearelongerm, a stablemate of The Storyteller, is the obvious danger, as he skipped a potential engagement in a Hunter Chase at Fairyhouse earlier in the week having won on debut at Tattersalls. Ballymagee looks next best.

CAPTAIN CAL had run well at Loughbrickland before tiring late on and he stepped up from that to chase home Sizing Diamond at Necarne last weekend. This does not look to be a much stronger race and he could get his turn. Drumlee Brexit is an obvious danger on his return alongside Le Mieux who has a couple of previous placed finishes.
